“Fake it until you make it.” ???

Are you inadvertently robbing yourself of the opportunity to get support to build expertise in an area that you might be not as strong in? Who defines what “making it” looks like? It won’t mean the same thing to everyone. As Vivian Manning-Schaffel writes in the article, “Fake It Till You Make It: Good Advice or a Setup for Failure?”, the real danger is ending up on a hamster wheel where we keep going, not knowing when we have achieved, when to stop and/or driven by the fear of being “found out”.

Having had lots of these types of conversation over the last year with mainly other women, the key is to reframe the narrative and replacing the negative self-talk of “I don’t deserve to be here” or “I am not competent” with “‘I’m confident. I’m doing the best that I can. I deserve to be here.” Being kind to yourself, allow yourself to build up the confidence you need in the role or new environment, and open yourself to learn from those around you.
